Lot 168
KYRENAICA. Kyrene. Circa 350s-331 BC. 1/10 Stater (Gold, 9 mm, 0.85 g, 12 h). Head of the nymph Kyrene (?) to right. Rev. Bearded head of Zeus Ammon to right, with ram's horn over his ear, all within circular incuse. BMC 63 and pl. VII, 24 (same dies). BMFA -. Naville pl. I, 9 (same dies). SNG Copenhagen -. Very rare. Light scratches and scrapes, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

Naville's dating of this issue to 435-331 BC seems unnecessarily broad; presumably, the piece was issued shortly before the Hellenistic gold coins (see lots 169-171 below).
